There is no doubt that contemporary technology has become a part of every detail of our current lives. Modern technologies in aesthetic medicine, have allowed us to perform non-surgical alternatives to a wide array of cosmetic operations in the simplest, easiest and fastest possible ways while achieving tangible and effective results as well, without a recovery period.
HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound)
The HIFU device relies on the simple science behind sound waves that can penetrate deeper into the skin than lightwaves. HIFU possesses the penetrating abilities just like ordinary sound waves, which are used in many medical technologies used for diagnosis. Despite the delay of HIFU technology in becoming available in the world of cosmetology, it immediately became a staple and a strong competitor for cosmetic surgeries and other modern techniques that are used as an alternative to plastic surgery.
The use of HIFU technique in plastic surgery
As mentioned before, the HIFU device launches ultrasound waves that penetrate the layers of skin and tissues, and has many medical and cosmetic uses. However, it should be noted first that these ultrasound waves are divided into two parts, each of which has its own characteristics and uses, which are as follows:
Double Power, Low-Frequency Ultrasound:
This type of ultrasound has strongly entered the world of plastic surgery since its discovery, and this technique was hence called HIFU, which stands for high intensity focal ultrasound. It is used in many cosmetic procedures, such as:
- Face lift.
- Wrinkle treatment.
- Lifting of sagging skin in areas of the abdomen, arms and thighs.
- Fat breakdown to facilitate its suction or absorption by the body.
- Chin and neck tightening.
HIFU Use for Face and Neck Lifting
HIFU is a cosmetic treatment that relies on skin tightening in a non-surgical manner. The FDA has approved its use for cosmetic procedures, as it uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production which leads to skin tightening. Therefore, the HIFU technique is considered a safe and effective method for tightening the face and neck, as well as wrinkle improvement. Results usually appear within a few weeks after treatment, without facing the risks or downtime associated with surgery. HIFU technology allows us to observe the tissues under the skin, due to its accuracy in delivering ultrasound waves. This machine consists of a device of multiple thermal exits, in addition to a TV screen that enables the doctor to view the tissue to control the delivery of the energy and ensure the effectiveness of the procedure.
This laparoscopic technique relies on raising the temperature of the tissues under the skin, specifically the thin layer above the muscle on which all skin tissue is attached. These deep layers are heated in a short period of time, then the device is passed on the skin of the face, neck, and other desired places to be lifted and tightened. This, in turn, enables ultrasound waves to penetrate deep in the skin, activating the inner layer and stimulating it to build new tissues of collagen, which in turn works to tighten and lift the skin by shrinking it and making it appear tighter and younger.
A single session of HIFU treatment is usually sufficient and takes between 45 and 60 minutes. Results start to appear immediately after the session and reach their peak after 2-3 months. This technique works on building the skin from the inside out to restore collagen. The patient can also undergo another session if needed, but only after 6 months to a year after the first session to maintain optimal results.
Advantages of using HIFU technology
HIFU technology uses ultrasound imaging, which allows for the visualization of the deep layers of skin tissue being treated, which allows us to direct energy towards it, getting the best results.
HIFU does not require precautions after the treatment session, unlike surgery. HIFU also does not require a specific recovery period, as it is possible to return to work and daily activities immediately after the procedure.
Who is eligible for HIFU?
HIFU is best suited for people aged 30 or above, especially those who started noticing and being disturbed by sagginess of the skin of the face or the neck. It can also be used after losing weight for people of younger ages, as well as people who have had lifting surgical procedures to maintain the results of the operation. It is worth noting that HIFU is most sought after by people aged 40-50.
The desired cosmetic results from the HIFU technique
- Get tighter and younger looking skin.
- Slow down the signs of aging on the face and neck.
- Lifting and tightening the cheeks without surgery.
- Defining the lower jawline
- Maintaining the freshness of the skin and the overall vitality of the face
